Having a disability can greatly alter our way of life but for this dog, her disability was never a barrier to living a full and happy life.
Lucky was first found by a woman sitting inside a cage while she was out horseback riding. The woman quickly stopped and pulled her out of the cage and noticed that there was something wrong with her legs.
She took pictures of the sweet dog and uploaded them on Facebook and one co-worker immediately messaged her to sit tight as there was someone picking up the dog. GTS Husky Rescue, an organization that saves abandoned dogs especially Huskies and Malamutes, came to take care of her.
According to Kaylin, when they first met Lucky, she was on her paws with her tail wagging. And she definitely loved getting belly rubs from anyone she can. As for her legs, they first tried to see if surgery was an option but the x-rays showed that surgery was off the table. So they tried the prosthetic route to make walking for Lucky a bit better.
Lucky used to crawl on her front paws as they were not straightened out. At first, she didn’t like the prosthetic mainly because she was confused about how to use it. But when she picked up on it, she definitely loved using it. Aside from that, Lucky had a big support group with her.
Corey, the ranch director, fostered her for three months with her three other dogs. Then she had a volunteer massage therapist who gave a full hour every week to help rehabilitate her legs and ensure that she wouldn’t have a problem with the prosthetic. Once she was fully confident walking on her own, it was time to find her forever home.
For two years, there were only a few applications for Lucky but they never gave up on her because they knew that it would take someone special to take her in. Then they received a promising application from a girl named Jessie who lived with her college girlfriend Chloe and her dog Stella.
According to Jessie, a nurse in the hospital where she worked as a certified child life specialist first told her about Lucky. She thought that with the kids that she had been working on, Lucky would be a great fit for her. And when the two met, they were really a perfect match. Jessie was so patient with Lucky and this was exactly what Lucky needed.
But before they could go home, Lucky needed to pass the test with Stella since they wanted both dogs to be comfortable with each other. When they were introduced, Stella played well with Lucky so it was an absolute yes that Lucky finally found her forever home.
Jessie wishes Lucky to be a therapy dog as she believes that she can set an inspiring example for all the kids who are just like her. Life can be different with a disability but that doesn’t mean you can’t live it happily and fully. Watch Lucky’s adventure in the video below.
