Having a pet dog seems like an easy thing to do but in reality there’s a lot of responsibility involved.
Mike, an office manager and his 8 year old son, Tommy were about to find out. Skippy, was a 4 year
old rescue from the local shelter who loved playing ball with Tommy, They had Skip for a couple years
now, they consider him part of the family, all is good in small town usa
One late afternoon Tommy met up with his friends at the school baseball field, he didn’t bring
Skippy he looked to be having fun chasing squirrels so Mike told Tommy leave him and go
have fun with your friends. Well a chain of events took place that no one could have foreseen .
Mike got an important call from the office and went inside to take it, Tommy’s ball game turned into a double header
and oh, Skippy found that hole in the fence that was on Mikes to do list.
Mike was the first to determine Skippy was out of the yard, he started calling him, running from
neighbor to neighbor with no luck. The problem now is its getting dark, Maybe Tommy had him,
hes done things like that in the past even though I said no, yup let me check the kids at the school.
It took a few minutes to get over there which made it a bit darker, Mikes chest was pounding, is he here ?
He got closer and closer to the school field and everyone started coming into view, NO SKIPPY !
Mike held back from telling Tommy in front of everyone so he just said get your stuff Tom its
time to to go.
Back at the house Mike broke the news, and once he comforted his son they decided on a game plan
Tommy wrote up posters to nail to the phone poles in the morning in case a neighbor seen him.
Mike was on the phone calling everyone he knew to be on the look out. It was well after midnight
when father and son went to bed.
The next 2 days came and went with no change. Tommy wasn’t taking it well at all. Mike was worried
Skippy was gone for good but kept that to himself. If only we were better with his obedience training
Mike said., then he wouldn’t have left the yard at all. Buy the end of the week things were shaping up
as more of the same when the phone rang and Mike grabbed it, it was the vet on the line, he told Mike
not to get your hopes up but a family 2 towns away brought the stray dog into the office and
scanned the chip and its reading very blurry but it could be a match.
Mike ran out the house so fast he almost knocked Tommy over, come on Tommy we have to go.
They hopped in the car and were at the vets so fast Tommy had no time to ask whats going on, but then the smile started, he had a feeling about Skippy. They went in through the kennel doors and checked all the dogs on
there way up to the front, no Skippy. They looked at each other and slowly continued to the front office area,
that’s when it happened they both saw there family member at the same time, it was joy and relief all around.
Mike promised his son he would finish the repairs on the fence, and Tommy asked if they can get a better training
manual to guard from this type of thing again. This time ended well but its not always the case, stay safe !
