Getting an abandoned dog home with separation anxiety issues can be quite a work as you do not really know the background of the dog and where it originated from as well as the reasons for it.
Surely if you are reading this article, you may be trying to find ways to help your one of your loving dogs deal with separation anxiety and have maybe tried everything possible already such as toys, treats, chews, crates and kennels.
Abandoned dogs can react to separation anxiety in various ways such as destroying things in the house, running away, howling, excessive panting or drooling, etc. If you are seeing such signs, you need to check with your vet as well. But if you are not really planning to get your dog on drugs as they may have side effects as well, here are a few tricks that you can try to make your dog feel less anxious when you walk out of your door next.
- Desensitizing to your exit: Dogs are very intelligent and know when you are about to leave your house. They can easily pick up the queues when you are taking your keys, putting your socks and shoes on, and getting dressed. They know that you are going to go out. These signs can become triggers for them, and they start getting anxious when they see you with these things.
One of the ways to get them used to these signs is by doing such behaviors and not leaving. So, as an example, you can pick up your keys, and then put them in your pocket or just sit down on the sofa. Wear your shoes and sit down with your do and pet him. Walk out of the door and come right back in and meet your pooch. These activities will desensitize your dog in a few days or weeks for sure and he will not get so worried when you do these activities.
- Leave your trace behind: One of the other ways you can make your pooch feel comfortable is by leaving any of your worn clothes close to where he usually sits or sleeps so that he will feel that you are in the house.
- Record your voice: This could sound a bit weird, but you can record your voice as though you are talking to someone on the phone and play it whenever you leave the house. The dog will believe that you are still in the house, though and will not be anxious.
- CBD Oil: You can also use CBD oil if you really feel that your dog is anxious in specific scenarios especially when there are fireworks or sounds that he is not used to and you are not at home.
